Dr. Shinsaku Nomura, a Senior Economist of the World Bank, delivered a career seminar on international organization, titled “Building Career for International Development: How to Make Yourself Marketable to Market Demands” in Kobe University’s Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies (GSICS) on August 24th, 2018. Dr. Nomura is Professor Ogawa’s former student, and he has both master’s and doctoral degrees from Kobe University. He has more than 14 years of professional experiences in development work and is currently managing the World Bank’s education projects in India and Pakistan.
In his seminar, Dr. Nomura stressed the importance of “self-assessment” for any job seekers. It’s a process of identifying personal core skills and knowledge, attributes and motivations, as well as strengths and weaknesses. Participants were encouraged to learn new skills by practicing these skills repeatedly. He also showed the participants how to enhance their resumes and cover letters for potential employers. He introduced some interview tips on how to promote self-experience and specific skills to achieve interview success. Lastly, Dr. Nomura provided helpful tips for conducting research, including how researchers should acquire technical skills.
This seminar was a great opportunity for graduate students to learn first-hand from a World Bank subject matter expert how to pursue a career in international organizations.
