On March 29th, 2022, as one of the “Risk Management Seminars”, Dr. Elizabeth Meke, Senior Research Fellow and Acting Director at the Centre for Educational Research and Training, University of Malawi, delivered a lecture on the theme of “Impacts of COVID-19 on Primary Education in Malawi: Policy Relevant Research”.
She presented how the policies and strategies were being implemented and their impacts on primary education through the use of document analysis to understand the policies, and through the analysis of primary data to gain insights into current practices in Malawi. She highlighted that COVID-19 caused major disruptions to the education system, including loss of learning due to school closures, and that it was important to develop policies and strategies to prevent the further spread of the pandemic as well as to ensure the continued learning of pupils.
Dr. Jun Kawaguchi, Associate Professor at the University of Tsukuba, was a discussant and raised some critical questions such as the impact of policy, the issues of teachers’ situation and evaluation of ICT in Malawi. Many participants engaged in an active Q&A session during which they shared their perspectives on Dr. Meke’s research project and asked about the details of policy and practices for COVID-19 in Malawi. The seminar provided an excellent opportunity for the students to learn about the impact of COVID-19 in Malawi.
