The 35th Annual Conference of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID) was held over two days, from Saturday, November 9 to Sunday, November 10, 2024, at Hosei University and the JICA Ogata Sadako Research Institute for Peace and Development. At this conference, under the theme “International Cooperation and Human Security in Uncertain Times,” there were 81 general oral presentations, 13 roundtable sessions, 6 organized sessions, and 31 poster sessions, in addition to the plenary session. From the Ogawa Seminar, three doctoral students presented in the general oral sessions, while six doctoral students and two master’s students, totaling eight participants, presented their research findings in the poster sessions.
At this conference, a co-authored paper titled “Language of Instruction and Learning Achievements Inequalities in Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa: A Residualized Quantile Regression Analysis Using PASEC Data” by Jean-Baptiste M.B. Sanfo, a lecturer at Shiga Prefectural University and an alumnus of the Ogawa Seminar, doctoral student Abdoul-Karim Soubeiga, and Professor Keiichi Ogawa, was awarded the “Special Prize by the Award Selection Committee.”JASID selects award-winning works annually to recognize and promote research achievements related to various issues in international development. The award is presented at the annual conference, honoring books and papers published on these topics in the given year.
The first day of the conference began with opening remarks by Professor Satoru Matsumoto of Hosei University, who served as the Chair of the Conference Organizing Committee. During the plenary session, questions were raised from a global perspective on how the practices of international cooperation and human security can contribute to sustained peace and prosperity in uncertain times, sparking active discussions to deepen the understanding of the modern world. After the conference sessions on the first day, a networking reception was held, providing valuable opportunities to connect with researchers and practitioners from other institutions.

The next Spring Conference of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID) is scheduled to be held on June 21 and 22, 2024, at Hokkaido University.
