In one of the Risk Management Seminar Series: United Nations and SDGs sessions, organized by Professor Ogawa, welcomed the presence of His Excellency Sothea Lim, the Director General of Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS). It was the ninth session of the seminar, which had a total of 15 sessions.
Since the seminar was conducted online, His Excellency Sothea Lim gave the lecture virtually from his office in the Kingdom of Cambodia about ‘SDGs and UN Support in Cambodia’. The Director General started the presentation by shortly highlighting the background of SDGs, and its differences from the previous global goal, MDGs. Then, he briefly discussed Cambodian educational background before he explained about the education policy in Cambodia. After that, he talked about the education plans and progress in the Cambodian educational context before he presented some significant challenges for Cambodia to reach and achieve the SDGs goals.
To tackle those issues, he signified the importance of the Development Partners (DPs), which includes the UN and other national and international supports. His Excellency also mentioned those major DPs that played a crucial role in supporting MoEYS, which are UNESCO, UNICEF, United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), World Food Program (WFP), The World Bank (WB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), European Union (EU), Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Global Partnership for Education (GPE). Then, he presented the funding modalities in Cambodia before he concluded with the current policy for the development of the Cambodian education system.
After his presentation, there were mixed questions from the participants, and he was delighted to answer all those questions to ensure the understanding of the participants about the Cambodian education system and development. From his lecture, participants gained knowledge regarding the education planning and policy as well as the progress and importance of the funding from the Development Partners.
I, on behalf of Ogawa-semi students, would like to show profound appreciation toward His Excellency Sothea Lim, for his valuable time and presence to deliver this lecture, and also to Professor Ogawa for this amazing opportunity.
