My internship with the International Labour Organization (ILO) in the Social Protection Team (SOCPRO) has been a rewarding experience, as it has allowed me to participate in critical efforts aimed at advancing social protection in Cambodia. My range of tasks has not only broadened my skill set but has also deepened my understanding of the complexities involved in social protection policies.
My work required me to actively participate in the production of training materials and capacity-building initiatives. These projects were specifically intended for Royal Government of Cambodia personnel, mainly those who are working in National Social Security Fund (NSSF), with the goal of empowering them in areas linked to social protection extension. This experience provided me with the opportunity to observe the actual implementation of policies that have a direct influence on the lives of individuals and communities. In addition to my involvement in training material development, my linguistic abilities were put to use as I assisted in translating documents between Khmer and English. I also played a crucial role in interpreting during informal and small meetings, ensuring effective communication and understanding among stakeholders.
Another important component of my internship was assisting with the creation of briefs, communication materials, and reports on social protection concerns in Cambodia. This assignment not only improved my writing skills, but it also improved my ability to present difficult material in an organized and concise way. Moreover, participation in workshops and seminars was an exciting aspect of my internship, allowing me to contribute and acquire first hand expertise in organizing such events. Additionally, communicating with many consultants, who are working on different social protection projects, has equipped me with new knowledge and a deeper understanding of social protection as a whole. I also took on various related duties as allocated, demonstrating my flexibility to contribute to the team’s overall success.
In conclusion, my internship at ILO has been a journey of personal and professional growth, providing me with valuable insights into the practical aspects of social protection policies. The tasks assigned to me have not only strengthened my existing skills but have also inspired a commitment to contributing to the advancement of social protection in Cambodia. I am glad for the opportunity to be a part of this significant work, and I look forward to applying what I have learned in the future. Last but not least, I would like to pay my gratitude to Ogawa-sensei for his invaluable guidance and continued encouragement, and to all my ILO social protection colleagues for their insightful mentorship and support.
