“Influence of Teacher Support and Classroom Discipline on Learning Achievement in Cambodia Secondary Schools: Focus on Students’ Socioeconomic Status,” written by Mr. Takumi Koike, a second-year master’s student in the Ogawa seminar, and Prof. Ogawa, and “The Influence of Household Socioeconomic Status on Vocational Senior High School Choice in Indonesia,” authored by Ms. Noa Yokogawa, also a second-year master’s student, and Prof. Ogawa, have been published in the Bulletin of the Japan Comparative Education Society No. 69.
Mr. Koike’s paper analyzes the influence of human and social factors in the classroom environment on student achievement in Cambodian secondary education, where the quality of education is challenged. The results showed that teachers’ psychological support for students had different effects on children from different socioeconomic backgrounds. These results highlight the importance of teachers’ psychological support as an element in the classroom that may mitigate the academic achievement gap due to differences in the family environment.
Ms. Yokogawa’s paper focuses on the rapid increase of vocational senior high schools in Indonesia since around 2007 and clarifies how this has influenced the school choices of students from different family economic situations, respectively. In Indonesia, when the number of vocational high schools increased, the probability of attending a vocational school for students with relatively high household socioeconomic status (SES) increased while when focusing only on urban areas, the probability increased even for students with low household SES who were assumed to have never attended high school before. These results suggest the possibility of expanding vocational education to achieve universal access to education.
Mr. Koike and Ms. Yokogawa received their master’s degrees in public administration from the School of International Relations and Public Affairs, Fudan University (China) in June 2024, in the Campus Asia Plus Program, while working as master’s students at the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies, Kobe University.
In the Bulletin of the Japan Comparative Education Society, “Influence of Parents’ Educational Level on Children’s Access to Pre-primary Education in Uganda,” written by Mr. Ayumi Yagi (Doctoral Student) and Prof. Ogawa was published in Issue 66, and “Determinants of Pre-primary School Attendance During Its Expansion in Bangladesh,” co-authored by Mr. Kohei Uno (Doctoral Student), Associate Professor Katsuki Sakaue, and Prof. Ogawa, appeared in Issue 67.
