Field Research in Bangladesh (Kohei Uno)

From 2023 August 17th to September 16th, I conducted field research as a research assistant in Bangladesh with the support of Associate Professor Md. Jahangir Alam and his students at the University of Dhaka, Faculty of Social Science, Department of Japanese Studies. This field research aimed to explore the teaching-learning process in lower secondary schools in Bangladesh, which is under the joint research “International Comparison Research Contributing to Improvement of Quality Education [achieving SDG4] in Developing Countries: Focusing on Teaching-Learning Process” . I visited five schools in the rural and urban area of Dhaka. In each school, I took a video record of a mathematics lesson and conducted teacher and student interviews as well as collected information on student notebooks and curriculum.

Starting from the greetings to a head teacher, I had to get permission to do this data collection by explaining the research objective and methodology. Most schools welcomed us to conduct research and they kindly shared precious information with us. With the big support of Dr. Alam and his students, I was able to collect all the information during my stay. Although this research is not directly related to my dissertation, it was an invaluable opportunity to gain knowledge on the quality of education at the lower secondary level and interact with teachers and students. Currently, our team is working on the analysis part based on the collected information. By utilizing this precious information maximally, I wish to contribute to the field of educational development in low- and lower middle-income countries.

I would like to convey my appreciation to my academic advisor Professor Keiichi Ogawa for providing this valuable opportunity with financial support and Associate Professor Md. Jahangir Alam for his kind coordination and management for conducting research in Bangladesh.
