From 2023 October 9th to November 8th, I conducted field research in Uganda with the support of Associate Professor James Wokadala and his research assistant at Makerere University. Field research aims to explore the teaching-learning process in lower secondary schools in Uganda, which is under the KAKEN project, “International Comparison Research Contributing to Improvement of Quality Education [achieving SDG4] in Developing Countries: Focusing on Teaching-Learning Process”. As a research assistant of this joint research, my duty was to collect information on the teaching-learning process in Uganda. Following the research framework, we chose high-academic performance schools in Kampala, and low-academic performance schools in Wakiso. I visited each school two to three times to take records of mathematics lessons, conduct teacher and student interviews as well as collect information on student notebooks and curriculum. The analysis is in progress. I would like to contribute to this project by analyzing the primary data and by writing a draft of an academic paper.
I would like to convey my appreciation to my academic advisor Professor Keiichi Ogawa for providing this valuable opportunity and the financial support, Associate Professor James Wokodalla for his kind coordination and management for visiting lower secondary schools.
