Risk Management Seminar “The Impact of Environmental Factors, Technological Access, Public Safety, and Public Health Outcomes in East Java Province, Indonesia” (Assistant Professor Yessi Rahmawati)

On April 12, 2024, we had a Campus Asia Risk Management Seminar (and JASID Kansai Branch research seminar)delivered by visiting scholar, Ms. Yessi Rahmawati, an assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business at Airlangga University, Indonesia. The research that Ms. Yessi Rahmawati presented is a collaborative research between her and Professor Keiichi Ogawa, and fully sponsored by Hyogo Prefectural Fellowship. In the seminar, she shared the findings of the collaborative research titled “The Impact of Environmental Factors, Technological Access, Public Safety, and Public Health Outcomes in East Java Province, Indonesia”.

The research has been conducted analysis using Methods of Moment Quantile Regression Analysis (MMQR). The inequality of urban green spaces (USG) between urban and rural areas, the significant increase of illness cases, and the lack of universal health care system in East Java motivated her to conduct further research. In her seminar, she explained briefly that a better internet connection statistically contributes to a reduction in the frequency of sick individuals, which is in line with previous literature. This is because the more availability of internet connection it will affect more efficiency and interaction among sick people, doctors and healthcare staff.

The study supports the positive impact of Urban Green Space (USG)s on health, echoing existing literature. She mentioned that the access to green spaces is associated with improved mental and physical well-being, reduced environmental stress, and social benefits. She also highlighted that the negative relationship between crime rates and health conditions. Crime is associated with detrimental health outcomes, including substance abuse and increased anxiety, fear, and discomfort within communities. Additionally, she pointed out that there are positive association between Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and health conditions on importance of economic prosperity in promoting overall well-being. Higher GDP enables investments in healthcare infrastructure, access to nutritious food, and resilience to external shocks. During the seminar, the participants were actively asking many questions to her and she kindly answered to all the questions.
