Mr. Yogo delivered a lecture on “International Development and Sustainability in Business Consulting”

On December 2, 2024, Kobe University’s Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies (GSICS) hosted a highly anticipated hybrid seminar titled “International Development and Sustainability in Business Consulting.” Organized by the CAMPUS Asia Plus Program, the event took place in the Presentation Room and virtually via Zoom, drew a diverse audience, including students, faculties, and professionals interested in the intersection of business and sustainability. The seminar featured Mr. Toyohiko Yogo, a prominent advisor at Ernst & Young ShinNihon LLC specializing in Climate Change and Sustainability Services (CCaSS). Drawing on his extensive experience in advisory services, Mr. Yogo explored the nexus of international development and sustainable business practices, emphasizing the growing role of private sector initiatives in advancing the global sustainability agenda.

The seminar commenced with a welcome speech by Professor Aiko Sakurai, who introduced the distinguished speaker. Mr. Yogo began the session by presenting an overview of climate change’s impact on global business operations, highlighting the urgency for sustainable solutions. In a heartfelt moment, Mr. Yogo reminisced about his days as a student at GSICS under the supervision of Professor Keiichi Ogawa. He reflected on how the unique academic environment and Prof. Ogawa-zemi played a pivotal role in shaping his career path. He emphasized the importance of developing soft skills, such as communication, teamwork, and logical thinking, which were integral to his success in the professional world. Mr. Yogo shared how the rigorous training and mentorship he received at Ogawa-zemi prepared him to tackle complex global challenges and achieve his career goals.

Mr. Yogo introduced CCaSS initiatives, which focus on helping organizations navigate the challenges and opportunities associated with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. Through detailed case studies and field experiences, he demonstrated how businesses can achieve profitability while promoting environmental sustainability and social equity. His presentation covered various strategies, such as implementing sustainable supply chains, leveraging green technologies, and aligning business objectives with the SDGs. The seminar also underscored the importance of cross-sector collaboration in addressing complex global challenges. Mr. Yogo shared insights on how consulting firms work with governments, NGOs, and international organizations to foster sustainable economic growth and climate resilience.

The session concluded with a lively Q&A segment, where participants engaged with Mr. Yogo on topics such as career opportunities in sustainability consulting, challenges in implementing ESG frameworks, and the future of business-driven sustainability. This inspiring seminar offered GSICS students a valuable opportunity to gain insights into the intersection of business consulting and sustainable development, motivating them to pursue impactful careers in the field.
