The 62nd Annual Conference of the Japan Comparative Education Society Held at Ritsumeikan University

The 62nd Annual Conference of the Japan Comparative Education Society (JCES) was held over three days from Friday, July 3 to Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Ritsumeikan University’s Kinugasa Campus. The first day featured a Roundtable Session; the second day included Research Presentation Sessions and an Open Symposium. On the third day, a Book Talk Session, an Exchange Meeting for Young Researchers, Research Presentation Sessions, and Selected Research Sessions were held. From the Ogawa Seminar, eight doctoral students and five master’s students presented their research findings during the Research Presentation Sessions and received valuable comments and advice from session chairs and participants.

During the Open Symposium, a talk event titled “Reexamining Modern School Education through the Lenses of Cunning Wisdom, Regulatory Wisdom, and Governing Wisdom in Asia and Africa” was held. The event reconsidered the concept of “legitimate knowledge” presupposed by modern school education from three perspectives: cunning wisdom, regulatory wisdom, and governing wisdom. It also explored, from multiple angles, the possibilities of human development that extend beyond the framework of institutionalized education.

During the Research Presentation Sessions on the second day, Professor Keiichi Ogawa gave a presentation in the “Education and Economy” session titled “Comparative Analysis of Education and Brain Drain in Polynesia and Micronesia: Evidence from Tonga and Kiribati.” Drawing on a mixed-methods analysis based on his long-term field research, he discussed how wage disparities and educational attainment influence brain drain in Tonga and Kiribati. In addition, Professor Ogawa’s co-edited book, Social and Emotional Learning: Education that Opens the Future through SEL and Non-Cognitive Skills, was featured during the Book Talk Session on the third day. Along with introducing the book, he shared stories and background information about the editing and writing process.
