The 15th International Conference on Education Research (ICER) was held at the Hoam Convention Center in Seoul National University in Korea, from 15th to 17th October 2014. The theme of the conference was; “Leading Creative Minds: Talent Development and Convergence Education.” Eight Ogawa-seminar students attended this conference, and presented preliminary results of their respective academic research projects. This was a very significant achievement for the students enrolled in the first-year Masters Program in Kobe University’s Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies (GSICS), because it was their first time to present in an international academic conference. Seven out of eight students utilized either primary data or secondary data or both, which they collected during summer internship and research in developing countries, namely; Uganda, Malawi, Indonesia and Lao PDR.
While five students made their presentations on the second day of the conference, the remaining three presented on the third and final day of the conference. Some of the students made poster presentations, while others presented in themed presentation sessions. All the students received very useful comments and guidance on how to improve their research projects. In addition, all the students gained firsthand experience associated with presenting in international academic conferences.
Besides making their presentations, the students attended presentation sessions of other participating researchers. The students found presentations by other participants to be new and interesting thus enabling them to get new perspectives about their own research projects. During the welcome party held on the 2nd day of the ICER conference, the students enjoyed Korean foods and cultural performances, and exchanged opinions and ideas with researchers of other universities.
