The 34th annual conference of the Japan Society for International Development (JASID) occurred on November 11th and 12th, 2023, hosted by Sophia University. The conference encompassed a diverse program comprising eighteen plenary sessions, eighteen general oral presentations, eighteen roundtable sessions, five organised sessions, in addition to poster sessions and one book talk. The overarching theme revolved around “Solidarity and Co-creation in Times of Complex Crises.”
The conference’s first day commenced with an opening speech delivered by Professor Taro Komatsu from Sophia University, serving as the chairperson of the conference’s executive committee. Additionally, the plenary session, titled, ” Where is Japan’s official development assistance heading after the revision of its Charter? – Following the revision of the Development Cooperation Charter,” featured a keynote address by Yoichi Mine, a member of the expert panel deeply involved in the revision process. Following this, an exchange of opinions took place among Mari Izuyama from the National Institute for Defense Studies, Professor Jin Sato from the University of Tokyo, and Professor Satoru Matsumoto from Hosei University. They offered guidance on development cooperation research and the appropriate implementation of ODA.
Comments were gathered from aid-related personnel in recipient countries, fostering a vibrant discussion on the anticipated impact of the new charter on development assistance practices, forthcoming research, and the advancement of human resource development. Following the first-day conference sessions, a social gathering ensued, offering a valuable occasion for engaging with researchers and practitioners affiliated with other universities. Professor Keiichi Ogawa chaired the oral presentation session titled “Education” held on November 11th. This session featured four presenters delivering their oral presentations. Dr. Katsuki Sakaue from Kobe University and Dr. Kazuo Kuroda from Waseda University were commentators in this session.
During the event, a doctoral course student affiliated with the Ogawa seminar delivered a general oral presentation. Furthermore, a collective of nine individuals from the Ogawa seminar participated in the poster session, comprising two doctoral students and seven master’s students, sharing and discussing their respective research findings.
