The 36th Japan Society for Africa Educational Research (JSAER) was held at Kanto Gakuin University on October 11–12, 2025. More than 20 researchers presented their studies during the two-day event.
From Ogawa seminar at Kobe University, four alumni and three doctoral students delivered oral presentations based on their ongoing or completed doctoral research. Among them, Mr. Takumi Kobayashi, a doctoral student, and Mr. Yudai Ishii, a doctoral student, received the Excellent Research Presentation Award.

Mr. Kobayashi’s presentation, titled “Family Involvement and Learning Outcomes in Ugandan Primary Education: Exploring Sociodemographic Variations during the School Closure and Post-closure Periods”, analyzed family engagement and learning outcomes in Uganda during and after school closures. Mr. Ishii presented “Exploring the Relationship between Women’s Intrahousehold Decision-Making and Household Expenditure for Primary Education in Malawi”, which examined how women’s intrahousehold decision-making influences educational investment for children in Malawi. Both studies were developed from their doctoral dissertations.
The conference began with opening remarks by Professor Nagisa Nakawa, Kanto Gakuin University, Chair of the Organizing Committee. The Special Symposium, titled “Sub-Saharan African Children’s Play from the Perspectives of Mathematical Enculturation and Interactions”, featured insightful presentations by Professor Nagisa Nakawa, Kanto Gakuin University, Professor Asayo Oba, Teikyo University, Associate Professor Masato Kosaka, University of Fukui, Associate Professor Kaoru Mori, Saitama University, and Associate Proessor Nozomi Sakata, Hiroshima University, followed by comments from Professor Akira Takada, Kyoto University. The conference concluded successfully with closing remarks by Professor Mikiko Nishimura, International Christian University, President of JSAER.
