Based on evidence of teachers’ motivation being one of the factors that determine the quality of instruction and on self-determination theory (SDT), the author analyzes the type and details of teachers’ three types of motivation through a case study of public primary schools in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR. By using statistical and qualitative analysis,this study reveals that the structure of teachers’ controlled motivation comprises introjected regulation, and teachers’ controlled motivation has a similar role than autonomous motivation. From these two perspectives, the study shows that SDT can explain teachers’ motivation in Lao PDR.
