The 61st Annual Conference of the Japan Comparative Education Society held at Teikyo University

The 61st Annual Conference of the Japan Comparative Education Society (JCES) was held over three days from Friday, June 27 to Sunday, June 29, 2025, at Teikyo University’s Hachioji Campus. The first day began with a Roundtable Session, followed by a Research Presentation Session, an Event to Commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Society, and an Open Symposium on the second day. On the third day, a Book Talk Session, an Exchange Meeting for Young Researchers, and Selected Research Sessions were conducted. From the Ogawa Seminar, two master’s students and five doctoral students gave oral presentations of their research findings during the Research Presentation Session and received valuable feedback and advice.

The year 2025 marks the 60th anniversary of the Japan Comparative Education Society, and a commemorative event titled “Comparative Education in the Era of Film Cameras: The Legacy of Seiji Utsumi, a Pioneer in Photo-Based Presentations” was held. Numerous photographs taken during fieldwork in developing countries in Africa and Asia, as well as slides used in classes at the time, were showcased, vividly conveying the atmosphere of that era.

During the Research Presentation Session on the Second day, Professor Keiichi Ogawa of Kobe University gave a presentation in the “Education and Economy” session on “The Role of Education in Regional Mobility and Brain Drain in the South Pacific.” Based on his long-term field research, he reported on the actual conditions and challenges regarding the outflow of skilled human resources from the region. Also, in the Book Talk Session on the third day, Professor Ogawa’s co-edited book, Japanese Women Blossoming on the Global Stage: Career Development in Educational Work at International Organizations, was featured. In addition to introducing the book, he shared stories and background about the editing and writing process.
